A Virtual Concert Of Joy And Hope

On Sunday, Dec 20th, 2020 DCJS published their first virtual concert. It will be aired again on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2020.  Using the wonders of recording and the talents of our producer and web master, we will offer songs of hope, joy, struggle, and strength.

Concert Information

Needless to say, the pandemic has taken its toll on our group. We had to abruptly stop rehearsals in early March as the Covid-19 virus spread across the world. Our primary objective was to keep our members safe. We have struggled as a community to stay connected and make music. But thanks to technology, we’ve continued virtually to have rehearsals and to produce this extraordinary concert.

This program is a result of many hours of preparation, frustration, trials and tears as we’ve learned how to use modern technology. I’m so proud of our singers who have stepped up to put the time and energy into making voice and video recordings. I would especially like to acknowledge Mr. Alec Staples for his extraordinary skills and countless hours of editing to produce the amazing final product, and Mr. Emmett Scott, our amazing accompanist who contributed superb piano tracks.

I’m so pleased that a number of my Ithaca College School of Music Voice Faculty colleagues graciously gave their time and talents for this project. Thanks to Dr. Sean Linfors and Dr. Hana Cai and their amazing students for their work with us on Good Trouble; Daniel, Daniel; Servant of the Lord; and Spiritual.

The Program

The program is designed for the enjoyment of whole families.

The Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers are dedicated to the legacy of Dr. Dorothy Cotton, the Education Director working with Dr. Martin Luther King and others in the American Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.  Since 2010, this multi-generational chorus has shared the power of the Negro Spiritual to live audiences in Ithaca and on tour to Washington DC, Toronto ON, and last year to Dorothy’s birthplace, Greensboro NC, where we were hosted in Rev. William Barber’s Church, co-founder of the National Poor People’s Campaign.

The choir’s plans in 2020 included concerts in Ithaca, Central New York, and a spring tour to Atlanta GA, and back to Goldsboro NC.  Like the plans of so many other performing arts entities, we were forced to pivot to serve our mission in new ways, with new technologies.

Thanks to the ingenuity and dedication of Artistic Director Dr. Baruch Whitehead and Associate Director Emily Preston, we have continued through the pandemic with virtual rehearsals.  We miss singing together in person, and we especially miss singing for our audiences in these turbulent, unsettling times.

Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers have always offered free concerts, and this will be no different.  However, if you value what we bring to our community, we hope you will make a gift to the choir.  We are determined to sing out and march on...we hope you will join us.  Thank you!
